Road Trip Ready: A Simple Checklist for Car Rides with Your Dog

Some dogs leap into the car the second the door opens; others need a bit of convincing. Either way, the right setup makes every trip smoother, safer and a lot less messy.

Before you go

• Practice short trips. If your dog is new to car rides, start with five-minute drives that end somewhere fun, like the park.
• Skip the big meal. A light meal a few hours before leaving can help dogs who get queasy.
• Tire them out. A good walk before a long drive helps your dog settle and nap.

In the car

• Keep them secured. A well-fitted harness with a seatbelt tether, or a travel crate, keeps your dog from moving around while you drive.
• Protect your seats. A waterproof, hammock-style seat cover catches hair, mud and drool and stops your dog from sliding into the footwell.
• Back seat only. The back seat is the safest place for dogs.
• Never leave them alone in a parked car, even for a few minutes; cars heat up very quickly.

Pack a travel bag

• Water and a collapsible bowl
• Poop bags and a bag holder
• Leash and a spare collar with ID tags
• A familiar blanket or toy for comfort
• Treats for rewarding calm behaviour

On longer trips

Stop every two to three hours so your dog can stretch, drink and relieve themselves. If your dog gets very anxious or car-sick, it's worth speaking to your vet before a big journey.
